Rice 1121 – FAQs
What makes 1121 Basmati Rice different from other varieties?
The 1121 variety is world-renowned for its extra-long grain length. While standard Basmati is long, 1121 grains can reach up to 8.35 mm in their raw state and nearly double in size when cooked. It is also prized for its “non-sticky” nature and a distinct, nutty aroma that enhances biryanis and pilafs.
Does this rice require soaking before cooking?
Yes, for best results. To achieve the maximum grain elongation and a fluffy texture, we recommend soaking the rice in cold water for 30 to 45 minutes before cooking. This allows the grains to absorb moisture evenly, preventing them from breaking during the boiling process.
What is the difference between Sella (Parboiled) and Steam 1121 Rice?
1121 Sella (Parboiled): The paddy is steamed and dried before milling. This process drives nutrients into the grain and makes it extremely sturdy, meaning it is very hard to overcook or break. It is the preferred choice for commercial catering and heavy biryanis.
1121 Steam: The rice is treated with steam rather than soaking. This preserves the bright white color and the delicate aroma of “raw” rice while still ensuring the grains remain separate after cooking.
Is your 1121 Basmati Rice aged?
Absolutely. Good Basmati is like fine wine; it improves with age. Our 1121 rice is aged for a minimum of 12 to 24 months. Aging reduces the moisture content, which intensifies the aroma and ensures the grains don’t clump together, resulting in a superior “bite” and texture.
What is the ideal water-to-rice ratio for cooking?
For the perfect fluffy consistency, we recommend the following ratios:
Open Pot Method: Use plenty of water (like cooking pasta), then drain once the rice is tender.
Closed Pot/Rice Cooker: Use a ratio of 1 cup of rice to 1.75 or 2 cups of water, depending on how soft you prefer your grains.
